How BrightBytes Turns Data into Action

A relatively new service to the CNYRIC region, BrightBytes is a data analytics solution that integrates purposeful data across educational technology systems, analyzes results against research-based frameworks, and delivers actionable information that drives learning. Schools can use BrightBytes to help assess where a district is with regard to technology usage, as well to as provide easy-to-read reports that can be shared with educators and community stakeholders.

One of the BrightBytes solutions currently supported by the CNYRIC is "Technology and Learning." The Technology and Learning tool helps educational leaders use their own data - gathered through surveys of students, educators, and parents - to help allocate their technology resources for maximum impact. After the surveys are completed, BrightBytes arranges the data and ties it to research-driven insights that can be easily interpreted and implemented. Using a district's data, many reports can be created to address a variety of topics, including examples such as: “Professional Development Report,” “Infrastructure at School Report,” “Curriculum Report,” “Report for Parents,” and many more!

Another BrightBytes solution that is supported by the CNYRIC is "Learning Outcomes," which can be very helpful for administrators and tech directors. This solution involves the use of a browser extension to capture the use of apps that the students utilize. The program uses research-driven analytics to relate the usage across over 2,500 educational web applications with student achievement data. With the information, educators can discover which programs have the most influence. The information gathered also can help inform administrators about which applications could potentially be purchased across a grade level or school building based the usage data displayed by the students. Learning Outcomes can also be a great way of proactively identifying apps that violate district security and privacy guidelines.
