With the onset of the new school year, there is perhaps no better time to put student data privacy at the forefront of our collective efforts.
The Central New York Regional Information Center has been collaborating with other regional information centers throughout New York to help create a suite of tools that help districts account for changes in the state’s data privacy laws. The Data Privacy & Security Service (DPSS) offers inventory tools, professional development, digital debriefs, user group forums, and digital digests and blasts to help districts navigate the complexities of Education Law 2-D and the personally identifiable information of students.
Critically, the inventory tools component of the DPSS suite helps districts get control of the third-party software being used in their schools. The Data Privacy Inventory Tool simplifies compiling a software inventory as required by Education Law 2-d Part 121 Regulations. It provides a means for sharing a District's Parents' Bill of Rights, Supplemental information and compliance with components of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
RIC ONE currently hosts a wealth of additional information related to DPSS on this website, which also accounts for the challenges caused by (and the necessary response to) the COVID-19 pandemic. To learn more about DPSS and what it offers, please click here.
