October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which presents a great opportunity to highlight some important security practices that you can employ in both your professional capacity and personal life. Throughout this month, the CNYRIC will be shining the spotlight on a variety of cybersecurity awareness topics, in the pursuit of stronger everyday practices that will help you make smarter, safer decisions when online.
Enable Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA is a tool that can be used to provide an additional layer of security to your logins but asking you to verify your identify a second time (outside of your usual password). How this works can depend on both the website and the tool you're using for MFA, but an easy example: If you typically log into your work account from your desk, chances are your organization knows that's where you're at. But if you ever find the need to log in from home, or from the coffee shop, or any other outside-of-the-usual location that your organization doesn't recognize, your MFA tool might flag that as "unusual" and send you a request to confirm the login through the tool.
The CNYRIC partners with Okta to provide a cybersecurity solution for districts (and for itself), which works along these same lines!

The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has provided some additional information on multi-factor authentication, including a video that walks you through the process:
