Credit Recovery

Using technology to enhance engaged learning of at-risk students is high on every educator's agenda.  Early in the practice of integrating technology into the subject areas, pedagogues noticed that at-risk students responded positively to the computerized classroom environment.  Online credit recovery programs are becoming more popular as an alternative to helping students who have failed credit-bearing courses.

OCM BOCES supports two software programs in the area of credit recovery:  NovaNET, by Pearson, and PLATO Learning.  Both packages include full courses which articulate with the NYS Standards.  Students who have taken certain courses, failed, and have not received credit toward graduation requirements, may be eligible to take courses through a credit recovery program to earn the needed credit.  Several districts in the CNYRIC region are already using these classroom tools with great success.   Both are backed by research and a proven track record.  It is up to district leaders to decide whether credit recovery programs are right for their students.

Both of our credit recovery programs work in a similar manner.   If a school or district purchased 8 ports and there were 8 periods in a school day, up to 64 students could take a credit recovery course (8 periods x 8 seats per period).  Students log on to computers and can re-take a variety of HS courses.  Students move at their own pace, and each product has integrated assessment and student management systems.  In the schools in our area, usually the principal assigns one teacher to an identified credit recovery room.  Both package can also be used for special academic interventions, and there are  plug-ins available for struggling or learning disabled readers.

Research is showing that these programs are improving that chances for academic success for at-risk students. Once a district or school purchases a credit recovery package, the ITD team is there to provide Level 1 support.   This may include training, installation, service calls and troubleshooting.
