Curriculum Mapping
Curriculum Mapping is asking all teachers to document the content and skills they teach and then provide them with the opportunity to speak with their colleagues regardless of grade level or content about their real classroom teaching and how those practices affect our students. Through this process, we are able to identify gaps, redundancies, overlaps, and new learning. As we correct these areas, we create a coherent and consistent curriculum within and across schools that is aligned to our standards and responsive to student data and other school initiatives. We map because we have problems. Mapping allows us to identify and correct those problems so each of our students has a smooth journey from one classroom to another until graduation.
This is an interview with the curriculum coordinator from Fowler Elementary School in Arizona. She does a wonderful job explaining how important it is to plan prior to mapping, as well as, having building administrators build in time for teachers to work on their maps and meet. It is a must read. Mapping Interview
