5th Grade Teacher
St. Margaret's School
Syracuse Catholic Diocese Schools
Congratulations to Kristy Townsend, our May 2017 Featured Teacher! Kristy has been teaching for nine years, with the last five being at St. Margaret's School in the Syracuse Catholic Diocese. She currently teaches 5th grade at St. Margaret's School, where she started a 1:1 blended learning environment with Chromebooks last year.
What are some of the innovative ways that Kristy integrates technology into her curriculum?
Kristy uses Chromebooks in a variety of ways to foster 21st Century Skills. The students have used Google Drawings
and Google Slides
to create brochures
, Slides to learn about connotation, Google Sites
to create a blog last year, and WeVideo
to put their own poetry to images and music when learning about mood in ELA. The students have used technology in their Project-Based Learning units where they had to create their own civilization using what they learned in social studies. She also uses the advantages of Google Forms
to assess students and inform her instruction.
Kristy is constantly reinventing herself as a teacher, as she continues to try new things and build her repertoire of neat and interesting learning activities that support student learning. She is even working on using Breakout EDU boxes
with her students. She really enjoys providing a rich learning environment that is supported by technology.
How have students benefited from Kristy's technology integration initiatives?
Using technology effectively has helped Kristy create a classroom culture of collaboration. Her students have a safe place to practice life skills. In her classroom, students have a voice, even if they are too scared to answer in front of the class. The students could show off what they know in a way they prefer with varying types of technology.
